Assessing the Mavs size…or lack thereof

October 1st, 2009 | by crstuckey |

Do the Mavs have a size problem? We would not be asking this question if the Magic had not matched the Mavs offer to restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat. But nonetheless, the topic must be broached.

If you take a look at the depth chart, two centers are listed…Erick Dampier and Nathan Jawai. We all know what Damp brings to the table. He is a serviceable big man that isn’t going to wow you with his skills or spectacular plays. He is going to go out every night play his 25 to 28 minutes, score six or eight points and grab eight boards.

As for Jawai, I’m not sure anyone really knows what to expect from him this season. Assuming he makes the squad, I would keep my expectations relatively low. Jawai has played in six career NBA games (mostly mop up duties). What can he realistically contribute? I’d say he’s just a body.

Rick Carlisle has tabbed Drew Gooden as the starting center for “most of the games.” The only problem with that is the “Gortat Consolation Prize” is a power forward. Not an ideal situation in my mind. Don’t be surprised if the Gooden at center experiment is short lived.

We know the Mavs situation but what about the other teams in the league? I have compiled a list of players on each team that are 6-10 and taller.

As you can see, the Mavs have five players that fit the criteria but only one that is a true NBA center. Tim Thomas is a small forward that will never see a minute at the five and our favorite German is strictly a power forward. It’s times like these when I miss DJ Mbenga.

How do YOU feel about the Mavs big man situation?

Until next time…

Peace. Be good.

One Response to “Assessing the Mavs size…or lack thereof”

  1. By Cory on Oct 7, 2009

Given how weak a lot of teams are at center, I think a rotation of Gooden and Dampier could be serviceable for the Mavs. They could probably trade for guys like Nazr Mohammed and Hamed Haddadi for very cheap and they would help against teams with interior threats. The Sixers would love to get rid of Dalembert, but his contract blows. The Clippers and Wizards also have some real nice talent in the middle. And of course there’s always Eddy Curry :)
