Let’s talk summer league and free agency…Shawn Marion too

July 6th, 2009 | by crstuckey |

Although nothing can be made official until July 8, the free agency period has been active…especially for the “contenders.”  Typically, you see a lot of flirting but not much deal closing.  But this year, it seems we will be seeing a lot more deal closing.

Let’s look at some of the additions those contenders are making…

Los Angeles Lakers- Despite losing a star in the making in Trevor Ariza, they added Ron Artest

Boston Celtics- Looks like Big Baby may be headed out but adding Rasheed Wallace to their bench should prove to be beneficial…especially with a healthy KG

Cleveland Cavaliers- Tried for Artest and Ariza with no luck.  Added Shaq for entertainment purposes only but have yet address needs at the two.

San Antonio Spurs- Traded their trash to the Bucks for Richard Jefferson.  They are also rumored to be courting Big Baby…they never screw up

And your Dallas Mavericks- If Orlando doesn’t match the Mavs offer (they say they won’t), Marcin Gortat will ink a 5-year deal using Dallas’ MLE for next season.  Jason Kidd has also agreed to re-sign (More perspective when deals become official on Wednesday).

And the latest player rumored to be headed to Dallas…

Shawn Marion

ESPN.com and CBSSports.com are reporting a possible sign-and-trade involving the “Stack Chip” and Marion.  DallasBasketball.com sniffed out this possibility Monday morning.  It would probably take a third team to make it work but evidently the talks are becoming more serious.

As DallasBasketball.com points out, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Marion would end up in Dallas.  The “Stack Chip” could just be used to help Marion end up with a team that wants him.  It will be interesting to see who the third team might be.

If Marion were to land in Big D, the starting lineup might look something like this…

C- Marcin Gortat
PF- My favorite German
SF- Shawn Marion
SG- Josh Howard
PG- Jason Kidd

Jason Terry would remain sixth man.

That’s a nice combination of size and speed and we all know the brand of offense Kidd likes to run.  It’s an intriguing lineup but it makes you wonder if Marion is the best use of the Stack Chip.

In other Mavs news, the official summer league has been announced.  Here it is…

1 Aaron Miles G 6-1 175 Kansas
3 Rodrigue Beaubois G 6-2 182 Guadeloupe
4 Quinton Hosley F 6-6 210 Fresno St.
6 K.C. Rivers G/F 6-5 215 Clemson
7 Curtis Jerrells G 6-1 201 Baylor
8 Rudez Damjan F 6-10 200 Croatia
9 Luke Jackson F 6-7 215 Oregon
10 Henry Dugat G 6-0 174 Baylor
13 Nick Calathes G 6-6 194 Florida
14 Mickael Gelabale F 6-7 215 France
20 Herbert Hill F 6-8 235 Providence
30 Shan Foster G 6-6 205 Vanderbilt
34 Ahmad Nivins F 6-9 242 Saint Joseph’s
35 Trent Strickland F 6-5 215 Wake Forest
44 Andre Brown F 6-9 245 DePaul
50 Alfred Aboya F 6-9 245 UCLA
51 Moussa Seck C 7-4 220 Senegal
55 Bryson McKenzie F 6-10 230 Northern Illinois

A few notes on the roster…

A couple Baylor Bears for my boy’s Derek Ripley and Matt Mosley.  I think Curtis Jerrells could be a nice addition to the D-League squad.

Nick Calathes being on the roster surprised me.  He has already agreed to play for a Greek team whose name I can’t pronounce next year.  I’m not sure but I wouldn’t expect to see a whole lot of him.

I am not familiar with Moussa Seck’s work but I did notice he was 7’4”.  He may not be able to walk and dribble at the same but what the heck…he’s 7’4”!

And last but not least, the most important player on the squad…Roddy Beaubois.  It will be Roddy’s time to show Mavs fans what might be in store in the years to come.

More to come soon.  Until next time…

Peace.  Be good.
